Learning at home is an act of love, make it fun!
Hey caregivers, I hope life with your little(s) is treating you well!
Caregiving is HARD and if you're a working caregiver, it can be even harder! As a working mom, it's hard enough trying to find the balance between family, work, and extracurriculars. But, my teacher-eye let me know that I had to find time to reinforce academic activities at home. Unfortunately, the school system isn't evolving in a positive direction. Class sizes are increasing and seasoned, highly qualified educators are leaving the profession. So, what are my options? I gave homeschooling a thought but, I love my career. So I am choosing to find the best school I can for my daughter and supplement her learning the best I can!
Workbooks and explicit lessons have their place and can be great when used appropriately but, there are other methods. It doesn't have to take a lot of time; young children have short attention spans anyway! Learning can be integrated into daily routines. Grocery shopping? See if your child can find something that begins with a specific letter of the alphabet in each aisle. On the drive home, have your child count how many seconds long you're stopped at a red light. And learning at home shouldn't be limited to only Reading and Math. Complete a STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) challenge using building blocks or LEGO bricks, for example, make a structure big enough to fit a stuffed animal inside. Go on a nature walk and explore the plants and animals within the habitat. Use photo albums to discuss family heritage, culture and traditions.
Love on the little one(s) in your life by engaging them in simple fun ways to grow and stretch their brain. The possibilities are endless and I'm here willing to help you along the way!
